🏠 Best Household Budgeting Apps for Couples & Families
A household budget has two jobs a solo budget doesn't: everyone needs to see the same numbers, and you need to agree on what's shared and what's personal. These are the apps from our reviews that handle that best. All of them let a partner join without paying for a second subscription.
Monarch Money: best overall for households
Invite a partner at no extra cost. Shared Views label accounts and spending as yours, mine or ours. $99.99/year.
YNAB: best for agreeing on a plan
YNAB Together shares one subscription with up to 5 other people. Best if you want to decide on every dollar together. $109/year.
Goodbudget: best free option for couples
Shared envelopes sync across 2 devices on the free plan (5 on Premium, $80/year). Good for cash-style category limits.
Quicken Simplifi: best cheap option
Spending plan and watchlists for $47.88 in year one. Best if one partner runs the budget and the other mostly checks in.
On a tight budget? The cheapest workable setups are Goodbudget's free plan, CountAbout Basic ($19.99/year with manual entry), or a spreadsheet plus our free calculators below. For a side-by-side of the two leading paid apps, read YNAB vs Monarch.

📦 Switching from Mint?
If you're a former Mint user looking for a replacement, the most common landing spots are Monarch Money (closest feature parity), Quicken Simplifi (cheapest mainstream option), and YNAB (if you want a stricter budgeting method). Read the full reviews below before migrating.
Frequently Asked Questions
For most households, Monarch Money ($99.99/year) is our top pick: a partner can join at no extra cost, it tracks every account including investments, and Shared Views separate yours, mine and ours. YNAB ($109/year) is better if you want a strict plan for every dollar. Goodbudget's free plan is the best no-cost option for couples.
Quicken Simplifi costs $47.88 for the first year ($3.99/month billed annually), then lists at $6.99/month billed annually. CountAbout Basic is $19.99/year if you are happy to enter transactions by hand. Goodbudget and Rocket Money have usable free tiers.
Intuit shut Mint down on March 23, 2024 and pointed users to Credit Karma, which it also owns. Credit Karma lacks most of Mint's budgeting features, so many users moved to Monarch Money, Quicken Simplifi or YNAB instead.
Empower's free Personal Dashboard is best for investment tracking and net worth. NerdWallet offers free cash-flow tracking with credit monitoring in its mobile app. Credit Karma is Mint's official successor but has limited budgeting. Goodbudget has a free tier with envelope budgeting.
YNAB costs $109/year or $14.99/month after a 34-day free trial. Many committed users feel it pays for itself because zero-based budgeting changes behavior rather than just tracking it, and free workshops are included. It has a learning curve and may be overkill if you only want simple expense tracking.
Monarch Money (Shared Views and a free second login), YNAB (YNAB Together shares one subscription with up to 5 other people) and Goodbudget (shared envelopes, free on 2 devices) are the strongest choices for couples among the apps we have reviewed.
Only if you saved a Mint export before the shutdown, because Mint's export is no longer available. Monarch Money, Copilot, CountAbout and Quicken products can import transaction history from CSV files, so a saved Mint CSV can still be brought into those apps.
